COVID-19 TESTING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 

I would like to book a test for “X” date. How do I do that?

All bookings for RT-PCR tests and rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 must be done through our website at https://avalonlaboratories.ca/product/covid-19-testing/.

I am planning to travel internationally. What kind of COVID test should I have?

Please check with your airline or destination to see which type(s) of COVID test they accept.

I have a trip planned for “X” date. When should I book my COVID test?

Results for RT-PCR tests are typically available in 24-36 hours, while results for rapid antigen tests are available the same day. Please check with your airline or destination to ensure the timing of your appointment meets your travel requirements.

What types of testing do you provide?

We currently offer RT-PCR and rapid antigen testing for COVID-19.

Are your test results accepted by Transport Canada?

Yes. Transport Canada accepts the reports of our RT-PCR testing because we are an ISO 15189 nationally accredited laboratory.

Is your test accepted for travel to Hawaii?

Yes, our RT-PCR test is approved for travel into Hawaii.

Are your tests approved by the NL Public Health Lab?

Yes. The provincial Public Health Lab accepts the results of our RT-PCR tests because we are a nationally accredited ISO 15189 laboratory.

How much do your tests cost?

An RT-PCR test costs $125 + HST. This includes the cost of having a swab collected at our facility at 5 Sea Rose Avenue in St. John’s. If the swab collection is done by another agency, their fee is over and above our $125 fee for testing the swab and providing a report.

A rapid antigen test costs $60 + HST. This includes the cost of having a swab collected at our facility at 5 Sea Rose Avenue in St. John’s.

What is your refund policy?

If cancellation notice is provided at least one business day prior to the appointment (Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm), Avalon will provide a full refund (less an administrative fee of $6.50).

If cancellation notice is provided on the same day as the appointment, no refund will be provided, but Avalon will rebook your test for a later date.

If you want to switch from a PCR to a Rapid test, or from a Rapid to PCR test, please proceed to www.avalonlabs.ca and book the appropriate test.  Once your new test booking confirmation is received, please contact us and we will cancel the previous appointment and provide a full refund of the original booking.

How long will it take to get my results?

Results of an RT-PCR test take 24-36 hours from the receipt of your swab at our lab. If the swab requires repeat analysis, the turnaround time for the results will be longer than 36 hours.

Results of a rapid antigen test are delivered the same day that your swab is collected at our facility.

It’s been 24 hours. Why don’t I have my results of my RT-PCR test?

Results can take up to 36 hours – more if your swab requires repeat analysis.

First, check your inbox and your email’s junk / spam folder.

If your results are not in your junk / spam folder AND your swab was collected at our facility, email results@avalonlaboratories.ca to inquire about your report. Please include your full name, date of birth, and phone number. Someone will contact you between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

If your swab collection was done through another medical service provider, please contact them directly.

Is my COVID-19 test covered by my private insurance?

That depends on your coverage. While Avalon Laboratories does not direct bill insurance companies, we will provide you with the appropriate receipt.

Can I receive my results over the weekend if I have a swab collected at your lab on Friday?

Yes. Our lab staff will send you your results during the weekend.

Does Avalon provide a QR Code?

No. We do not provide a QR code.

Do you provide an official stamp?

Yes, if requested. The stamp is our ISO 15189 accreditation and our company logo.

What information is on the report? What format is the report?

The report states:

  • Patient name
  • Date of birth
  • Patient address
  • Date and time the sample was collected, received, and reported
  • Sample description (type of swab used)
  • Result
  • Name and address of Avalon Laboratories
  • Description of test performed (RT-PCR or rapid antigen)

Our reports are in PDF format.

My destination requires additional information not included on the report. What should I do?

Contact us prior to your appointment so we can include the required information in your report.

Can I pay when I arrive to have my swab collected? What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

No. All appointments must be paid for in advance to reserve your time slot. If you notify us that you wish to cancel 24 hours prior to your appointment, we will issue a full refund less an administration fee of $6.50 + HST for each test cancelled.

Why can’t I book an online appointment for “X” date?

That date or time is not available.

What if I can’t come to your facility in St. John’s to have my swab collected?
